The new series of eight paintings entitled “Colorforms” is a breakaway from my familiar multi-layered painterly style. My goal was to have fun in exploring color relationships and to expand my palette. I wanted precise but playful forms so the emphasis could simply be the dance between color and shapes. I found that it was freeing to get away from a complex approach involving brushstrokes and layers and symbolism. The drawing of the shapes flowed easily. The tweaking of muted but bright colors in different relationship scenarios was a fun exercise. I was reminded of the joy I felt as a child, mixing colors that I was drawn to and seeing where my unconscious hand would take me in free form drawing.

My work is informed by a sense of interior spiritual landscape and by nature and art history. As I paint, I’m responding to color and gestural marks on the surface. In the process of exploring paint, covering and uncovering, deeper images, spiritual themes and narratives, boldness and subtlety emerge; it often feels like a free dance and sometimes it feels like a battle or like digging for treasure.
